Are You A Gambler?

What do you think, ARE you a gambler? Do you like the rush that comes with games of chance or the thrill of winning when a prediction of your turns out to be correct?

The thing is, to some extent we are ALL gamblers. Now, I don’t mean that we are all ready to run off to the tables and slots at Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Macau or even online at this William Hill Casino page. No, I am talking about the everyday gambling that we all take part in, whether we consider it gambling or not.

Cautious gambler

Think about this for a second. What is insurance?

Most of us consider it as a form of protection against negative events, and it certainly is that. But it is also a form of gambling, especially for the insurance companies. When you take out insurance you are making a bet against the insurance company. To be sure it is a bet that you don’t want to win, but it is a bet none the less. And the insurance companies employ thousands of number crunchers to make sure that, just like in the casinos, the odds are against you.

What about all your bad habits? Smoking, drinking, driving too fast, over eating, stressful lifestyles, etc. All of these are also a form of gambling with your health or with your very life. You are betting that even though the odds might long, nothing bad will happen to you when you participate in dangerous or deadly habits.

There are probably daily instances in your work life, your relationships, and even in mundane decisions like what street to take to a given location, in which you mentally weight the odds and you gamble. Of course some of us are generally inclined to take the safe course in most instances, but others will always be gamblers, even if they never set foot inside a casino or place a sports bet online or with a bookie.

To be honest, I don’t even have a problem with what we consider true gambling. As long as you are wagering money that is discretionary, that is you don’t need it for regular expenses or for your retirement savings, or children’s education and such, then I say go have a great time playing the slots or blackjack or poker or whatever game of chance you might enjoy. As long as it does not become an addiction where you are compelled to place that next bet, I think the occasional trip to a casino can be downright stress relieving and relaxing. Especially when combined with a nice dinner and maybe a show.

If you are a gambler don’t worry too much about it as long as you’re not an addictive gambler. Because the truth is that on some level we are all gamblers at heart.
